Holding both a BA and LLB degree, Patrice was the first black partner at the Bowman Gilfillan law firm in Johannesburg, after which he eventually shifted to the mining industry. He bought low-producing gold mine shafts in 1994, and by using a lean management style, he turned the mines into a profitable business. Plus, he profited from South Africa’s Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) laws, according to which companies need to be at least 26% black-owned in order to get a government mining license.
