Patrick Soon-Shiong was born to Chinese immigrants in South Africa on July 29, 1952. His parents fled China during the war with Japan in the 1930s and settled in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. His parents owned a small grocery store where his father specialized in selling herbal medicines. After graduating from high school at the age of 16, Patrick earned his medical degree from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg at the age of 23.

Denver 7 reports that Leah Caldwell of Sacramento filed a lawsuit for the aforementioned sum against Chipotle, saying she was photographed without her knowledge or consent way back in 2006, after which she was asked by the photographer, Steve Adams, to sign a waiver allowing the image to be used for commercial purposes.
